Fix Your Credit Score: From C to A in Practical Steps
One TU grade can halve your loan rate. Six systematic steps to rebuild your credit score.
Your TU credit grade (A to J) is the report card of Hong Kong borrowing: higher grades unlock lower rates and smoother approvals. Grade A borrowers can pay 1-2% less APR, while Grade J may face rejection. Grades aren't born — they're built. Here's the playbook.
Step 1: Know your grade. Buy your TransUnion report (~HK$280) and hunt for errors — misrecorded late payments, loans that aren't yours. Dispute and correct immediately. Skipped by many, this alone can restore grades.
Step 2: Pay everything on time — the single biggest scoring factor. Automate cards, loans and utilities. One 30-day delinquency can drag your grade for over a year.
Step 3: Cut utilisation. Card balances ÷ total limits should sit below 30% (under 10% is better). Clear balances before statement cut-off — scoring reads statement-day balances, so paying in full after the statement still posts high utilisation.
Step 4: Stop scatter-applying. Every card or loan application leaves a hard enquiry; clusters within months depress your grade. Chase welcome bonuses deliberately — no more than 1-2 applications monthly.
Step 5: Keep old cards. History length matters; long-held cards are veterans of your credit file. Keep them open (unless the fee is absurd), even sock-drawered.
Step 6: Give it time. Delinquencies age off in about five years, bankruptcies around eight. A spotless record in between steadily restores your grade. Growing credit is gardening: daily watering (on-time payments), moderate sun (modest utilisation) and patience (compounding time).
